December 17, 1944:
The Germans have broken through the American lines in the Ardennes.
When checking for immediately available reserve units to counter the attack, General Eisenhower had to rely on the XVIII Airborne Corps resting in Champagne-Ardenne. Not the perfect choice since the Corps is not at all equipped for a winter campaign, lots of its soldiers are on leave and munitions stocks are low, to make matters worse.
The simple fact that this Corps happens to be just a few hours away from the endangered sector means the job is now theirs. Even though “Ike” hadn’t planned on deploying this unit before the spring of 1945, he has no other choice now but to link the 82nd and the 101st Airborne divisions to the 1st US Army already stationed in the Belgian Ardennes. General Gavin, temporary commander of the Corps, proceeds with alacrity to Hodge’s HQ at Spa, Belgium. Meanwhile, sufficient trucks are gathered to transport about 25,000 men. Gavin and Hodges send the 101st to Bastogne and the 82nd to Werbomont, 20 km south of Spa.
On December 19th, the 82nd Airborne takes up positions along the rivers Salm and Ambleve. After the passage of Kampfgruppe Peiper, the sector is calm but the Americans are bracing themselves for the appearance of the rest of the 1st SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler.
