Under cover of the night, the bulk of the Fallschirmjager Regiment 1 infiltrated the city and entrenched itself near the Continental Hotel. Thus reinforced, the Germans stopped the Allied push. Encouraged by this tactical success, Heidrich attempted a counterattack to take over Cassino’s set.
