Radscheid 18/12/44 06h00: General Jones thought that if his two encircled regiments pushed west, they would escape from the encirclement and help destroy enemy units around St. Vith. The order took 2 hours to reach the 423rd. Descheneaux, upon reading the order had these words “My poor soldiers will be cut to pieces!“. The two regiments, despite communication problems, decided to move at dawn.
The weather was terrible, fog and rain. The infantrymen had to advance painfully on narrow forest paths. Boyd Rutledge, D Coy / 422nd reported, “There was no road and we were advancing through the forest. We reached our attack positions at 1am after 9 hours of walking in the dark. We traveled 20 to 30 km in mud and snow, but actually only 5 km in a straight line. On the 423rd side the 2nd Battalion lead the march followed by the 1st and 3rd following the Halenfeld-Radscheid-Schonberg axis. At midday the 2nd Battalion of LtCol. Puett had reached the “Skyline Drive” and immediately received enemy fire. Puett directed his battalion to counter the threat.”
