Want to start HoN! what do I buy? Posted on [17/01/2019] à 15:24

Hey guys,

sorry for what is a bit of a dumb question.

Should I be waiting for version 2 to buy?

and if so what bits should I buy that won't be being reprinted?

>> are all the expansions still good to go?

>> is any of the kickstarter stuff worth having as want to buy some stuff on the sale now!

Thanks

Chris

Starting player? Get a Version 2 Core Box.

It is still also compatible with all expansions and any other DPG Heroes of… games

The game is basically the same but the artwork has evolved.

The heroes come with equipment slots, most V1 heroes did not have these.

The current rules are updated and hence should be better than the very first version.

The Version 1 card decks contain many cards that can be used only specifically for one purpose. Any cards pertaining to vehicles, artillery or aviation had to be thrown out of the deck for any scenarios that did not have any vehicles, aviation or artillery since those cards would be useless in that game. The version 2 deck cards offer a second option that is suitable for any scenario and makes the card useful even if option 1 on the card cannot be used in such and such scenarios.

The Version 2 type cards shall also be part of the up and coming Heroes of Stalingrad with decks for Germans and Russians.

"Civilians under fire" seems a must have, useable for HoN of course but also very suitable in case you add Shadows over Normandie.

Do check out the Army Boxes, US, German and Commonwealth.

Promo heroes 2014 seem part of quite a few scenarios.

The Gazettes contain special units and scenarios specifically designed for the units included. Some contain bigger playmats as well.

Extra expansions, troops and terrain, buy whatever you deem needed or what tickles your fancy. It is all compatible.

The more stuff you get, the more you should consider the storage boxes for troops and terrain, IMHO.

Have fun.

There are a few items that are now out of print, but still somewhat available I would recommend picking up.

Note, I am including links to various products for reference purposes. You may or may not be able to find these in the retail chain somewhere, and I am not checking for availability in the US store if you are over here.

All the gazettes are good, but Gazette #6 adds Non-commissioned officers you can mix in with your forces. That can be useful even if you don't want to use the advanced Morale system, but the NCO's were not added to the upcoming core box, so they can be handy to have 🙂

The Extra Units punchboard has some Anti-aircraft vehicles that could prove useful as the Airstrike system is revamped and becomes less random. This is a "single board" style expansion, all of which have been discontinued.

The US Rangers board is a nice set of troops for the US forces, and if you can get your hands on all of it the Rangers have a nice assortment across the entire line of HoN products. Again this is a discontinued board.

There is a single-board 1st SS Panzergrenadier to boost the German forces. SS, much like the US Rangers, is its own "sub army" and can swap equpment and such between many of the units, so more is better ;). This is a single-board expansion so also discontinued.

The US Army box really helps flesh out your US army forces to give you a nice mix of troops and abilities. The High Command is really only useful for big battles, but you also get an armored squadron, a sneaky Recon squadron, a Weapons platoon and a couple more heroes to add to your forces. The Army Boxes are also discontinued, although these may come back at some point in a blister pack, but that is not guaranteed. It would be a shame if the mix of forces did not return in SOME form later. Oh, and you get a set of extra US Order markers in case you want to use the Multiplayer rules 🙂

There is an equivalent box for the German Army as well, same notes apply although the troop mix is a bit different. A second set of German Order markers are in this box.

This gets into the Tangent of whether you want to add a 3rd faction to your collection. You can pick up the UK Army Box, which has the same sort of stuff as the other army boxes, but also includes a deck of Action cards for Commonwealth forces. That lets you run a 3rd faction with its own flavor. It does take a fair bit of cash to expand to a 3rd faction, though.

If you are going to go that route, then grab the UK Weapons Platoon as well. There is also a Canadian Platoon. Both of these are single board expansions so are discontinued.

Now to other, not Out Of Print (OOP) things. These are generally in order of over-all usefulness (new troops, new terrain, that sort of thing).

The boxed expansions seem to be fine atm. No announcement has been made that they are discontinued, so you can prioritize those a bit lower than the OOP stuff.

They are all worth having. Pegasus Bridge would be less useful unless you are willing to invest in the Commonwealth forces, but Carentan and St. Mere Eglise add elite troops (US airborne, falschirmjagers) that are Urban fighters, which is good because both boxes add a lot of urban terrain to the game system.

The D-Day scenario set is a bit specialized, but nice if you want to do some beach landing scenarios. The troops in the set are OK (the US Combat Engineers are good, the Festungkompanie are great for historically accurate scenarios for later in the war). If you are not intrigued by beach landings, this may be one to grab later if you decide you must have everything.

The Battlegrounds pack adds farm fields and swampy ground to the system as well, which can offer some new challenges 🙂

If you want to get into some "hold the bridge" type scenarios, then the River set is cool to add to your collection. But you will have enough other material to keep you going for a while I think 🙂 If you really want to do Operation Market Garden, then pick up Gazette #5. It includes a poster map of a rather famous bridge 🙂

There is a lot more stuff, but the newer stuff in blister packs is "current product" so in less danger of disappearing. I don't want to just sound like a shill for the whole line, so I think I will leave it at that.

There is a LOT to the line, it all depends on how deep into the rabbit hole you want to go 🙂

To add to Nostradunwhich's wonderful post, the Pegasus Bridge, Carentan and St Mere Eglise boxes all have an additional option for a special Airborne hero pack containing a single punchboard, order tokens, dice and special cards to give those factions a bit more pop on the table. When combined with the factions Airborne scenario expansion you have an entirely unique force. This ties in with the NCO gazette too, as the NCO's all have airborne versions too I believe.

Let me chime in here as well. Yes, it's probably better to wait until V2 is available for purchase, if just for the updated rules and new punch boards. If you just can't wait, it won't be terrible to pick up V1, as DPG has promised that some sort of upgrade kit will be made available to us veterans.

Chris, if you are in the US, then you will want to look at the US Shop on this website, as I'm finding that a lot of these items are just not available in retail or online stores any more. The US Shop has a more limited selection, but much better shipping prices than the World Shop. In particular:

St. Mere Eglise I could not find for a decent price anywhere but here.

Gazette #8 was an extremely limited run and is only available here. Get it while it lasts!

Keep your eye out for the upcoming P500 print of the Battlegrounds 2 & 3 sets, they are pretty great – very useful if you want to design your own scenarios. Set 2 is particularly good if you are also interested in the D-Day expansion, as you can create more interesting coastlines.

If you're thinking of going whole hog with HoN, and terrain in particular, I would highly recommend picking up at least two of the Battleground Storage Boxes. Very handy! I find the other storage boxes take up a bit too much space for my packed shelves, but if space is not an issue for you, they will be a huge help when you suddenly find yourself owning several dozen units!

Oh shoot! I forgot to mention that all the Gazettes are a "one and done" product. They were started as a subscription magazine for the die-hard HoN fan who has everything. However, Gazette #6 is a sort of "mini expansion" introducing a more realistic Morale system. It is interesting, but even if you don't want to use the extra Morale system, the basic NCO ability is pretty sweet:

NCO (Compendium, p. 47)

As long as you have an NCO on the board, you always have at least one Order. When activated in the Orders phase, this unit may immediately remove 1 Suppressed marker from another unit within 3 squares (but must have clear LoS to the unit it is helping). It can then act normally.

Besides all the great info provided here are my wife and mine oppinions about the different components:

Basegame: The only way to start.

Carentan: I found it to be building up to the climax where you fight over Carentan. I was expecting urban combat earlier but that only happens in the last 2 scenario's. Has some interesting and fairly difficult scenario's in it.

St Mere Eglise: My wife does not like this expansion so much yet.

*SPOILER ALERT*

There's a mission that's called "shooting pidgeons" or something like that. It pretty much comes down to that.

*END OF SPOILER ALERT*

St Mere Eglise uses more building early on and uses more infantry encounters. As far as we can tell after playing 3 of the 6 scenario's.

Civilians under fire: Played only the first scenario yet, but has some cool mechanics like unarmed civilians.

We bought the gazette with 101st airborne and the brandenburgers. Both elite platoons that come with their own mini campaign's. Have not played that.

My wife and I really like playing scenario's, so there's some expansion's we bought (like 4th armored and 1st SS panzer) that do not come with their own scenario's. So we'll either have to play point buy in existing scenario's, look for community scenario's or come up with our own. Keep that in mind when deciding what to purchase 🙂

Do you know that if you go to the store entry for a product, like say the 4th Armored, the entry will display a list of scenarios available in the download section which use that product? You might want to check some of those out. The entries in the Downloads section will list ALL products required by the scenario, so you can hopefully download scenarios that use the materials you have available. That may give you another option beside trying to build a different army using the same point totals.

Apologies for thread necromancy but I have related questions:

1) is Version 2 currently available?

2) if not, when is it due? Is it Kickstarted or P500'd? If so, please can you provide links?

3) if it is already available, how do I tell the product I am buying is v2 not v1?

Many thanks for any help you can provide to a confused and overwhelmed newbie!

No, version 2 is still in planing and not available to buy and i wont expect it to be released till 2021 tbh.

If you would like to start with the game you can also start with the v1 Box

In combination with the compendium you should be up2date with the current rules, or you start with heroes of Stalingrad, there are the latest rules

Hi Muzza,

1 – Heroes of Normandie 2.0 is not released yet.

2 – There is no scheduled date announced yet.

3 – The 2.0 core box has new artwork. It looks very different from the old, first edition box.

If you would like to start playing now, may I suggest trying Heroes of Stalingrad? It's new and available and uses all of the same 2.0 upgrades you'll see in the HoN 2.0 box.

Wow, thanks for the super-quick and helpful responses!

I like that you both suggested picking up HoS as an interim jumping-on point, as this was already my 'backup' plan.

Follow-up question:

To save on shipping I'd quite like to buy the storage options etc at the same time as purchasing the base game.

It's not clear to me whether, if I buy "HoS Game Elements Storage Boxes" from the webstore, I would ALSO need to buy "HoS German Storage Army Box" and/or "HoS Russian Storage Army Box". Is there any duplication/redundacy across these items or are they intended to store completely distinct things?

Also, any tips for expansions to prioritise/avoid? I notice the store currently has everything except the Core Terrain Set (which I assume is just duplicate tiles?) and Kelly's Heroes…

Final question. I am a compulsive sleever of games, and notice you can buy sleeve bundles. Can anyone attest to the quality of these sleeves? Are they comparible to Mayday Standard sleeves or FFG Premium sleeves? Or anywhere inbetween? If you happen to know the thickness (microns) this would be a useful benchmark…

TIA!

There are two storage products, each with a different purpose.

(HoS) Game Elements Storage Boxes, for storing common game elements like blast templates, order tokens, suppressed markers, activated markers, destruction markers, turn chart markers, dice, objective markers, … In other words, tokens that are not linked to an army or unit.

(Russian/German) Army Storage Boxes, made for storing the Recruitment Tiles and the Unit Counters. These speed up setup a lot. There are stickers which help you identify groups/regiments/… A highly recommended product.

Here's an example of an American Army Storage Box drawer (six drawers per box). The Russian, German and Commonwealth Army Storage Boxes are the same, just with different art/styling.

There's also a third line of storage products, called the Battleground Storage Boxes for storing the large Terrain Boards. Very handy, but very out of stock at the moment. There was reprint last year, but that print run is also out of print at the moment. I guess these will get reprinted someday, if there's demand.

The official sleeves are of decent quality. Not the thickness of FFG sleeves, nor as thin as MayDay Standard sleeves. Somewhere in between, I think. I'd compare the thickness to MayDay Premiums at 90 micron, but I have no official micron value.

The height of the sleeves is tight, not as (too) much overflow as most FFG sleeves. About 1mm left at the top.

I think there's a buying guide somewhere on the forum, not sure where though.

Core Box Terrain Set are indeed duplicate terrain tiles from the HoN Core Box.

At the moment I own almost everything about HoN (Stalingrad and Compendium apart, plus… Obviuosly, some of the "out of stock" materials that I had not a chance to buy due to my entrance into the hobby later, or due to the fact that I had not spare money to spend once they were put on sale… By the way, I am upset about this "Out of Stock" policy… It also happend with the 1st SS panzer division exp., that someone told me as not meant to be reprinted, while it was reprinted some day afterwards).

And – returning to the point of this "reply" to the original post – I find it difficult to "handle" the sheer amount of tokens and weight of all the terrain sets and expansions sets of terrain… Terrain tiles are too heavy and thick to "move all them around", from home to my ludoteque where I can setup HoN gaming sessions usually; and I also find it difficult to setup / unsetup games due to the fact that the sheer amount of units and tokens is so high that, even using ziplocks and units' "tags" on them, the "Army Boxes" into which I store them now, do not close themselves properly: the materials do "exit" from those boxes, if you understand what I mean !!!

My now deceased grandfather was an Alpine Trooper during WW II and he saved an ammo crate / loader for machineguns that I would like to find in order to store those things "in one go" and in a sort of "fancy" way… But unfortunately my grandma does not recall if that ammo crate is still at her home or if it has been thrown away as garbage by my grandad himself or by her, or by some other relatives of mine…

I recall that the ammo crate in exam was still used when I was a child, to store bills and medecines by them (my grand-parents) and afterwards my g.dad went to the hospice for older people, it seems to have "disappeared"… By the way. I wrote this long story of mine because I am going mad because I always want to bring with me all my collection of terrain tiles and boxes, so that I can setup scenarios accordingly to the ludoteque 's customers will, but the weight and space occupied by all HoN stuff is HUGE !!! DAMN HUGE !!! And I don't even own the Stalingrad boxes and the Compendium of rules!!!

I had preferred to see – at least – the terrain tiles and sets printed in "plastified / laminated paper" instead of being made in thick and heavy cardboard (which tends also to be subjet to weathering and angles breaking if they fall from hands or from the gaming tables).

I appreciated alot the "paper" terrain set coming with the "Market Garden" expansion, even if I do find it impossible to setup both the 2 parts of terrain togheter (they are too wide and big, even for the ludoteque's tables) !!! What a mess and what a shame !!!

This is – in my opinion – the only "drawback" (apart the mere money amount spent in order to try to collect everything) of the HoN system.

Apart of this issue it still remains my preferred wargame (apart Warhammer, which I cannot afford to buy, due to the cost of its "elements"… Even the "core" or the "basic" warhammer boxes are too much for my pockets).

And even HoN was – to a certain extent – until I spotted some cool offers from online retailers and I also spotted some cool reprints here on the DPIG site too… So I was able to buy alot of stuff in two or three "go"… And I retain myself "lucky" for this chance I had to exploit, in order to start my cool HoN collection.

I am not so happy, on the contrary, about the fact that a version number 2 is on the run to arrive on the shelves… And I already have started to collect stuff… But those stuff are already "old" and "not up to date". And I didn't even imagine that !!! I also dislike the fact that – even if cardboard tokens are cool and thick – they tend to suffer weathering too much… Expecially certain expansions tiles… Which are very poor in quality. They tend to "bend" on the sides or to "peel off" on the angles during unboxing or storaging. And also they are so "tall" that they do not allow me to properly close the Army Boxes too !!!

I also do not like the fact that TOO MANY of the recruitment tiles and or units tiles do present misprints and similar issues…

Along with the fact that some units in HoN are printed in a way that reminds you about Shadows of Normandie (since those units are meant to be used in both the versions of the system)… But I am a "purist" and I dislike the zombie like units of HoN !!! They should have kept the systems separated !!!

Both of them do mix well togheter… But I would have preferred not to see "strange" units in HoN sets… As I would have liked to see some Italian troops' expansion set; or a boxed set containing ALL the material seen in the Gazettes or similar stuff… Such as – maybe – a set containing the Rules Compendium along with the "laminated version" of the terrain sets till now produced… It would have been a preferred purchase, instead of being obliged to purchase 3 or 4 different sets containing too much heavy tiles, in terms of mere kilograms of weight, I mean.

I am only giving out my thoughts and suggestions, and I want to see the game and the system improve… There is "nothing personal", I mean…

I hope I've not offended anyone but also that I've given out cool material onto which to discuss about or to take "inspiration" from it in order to improve the products and the customer care of the DPG and the Heroes System itself… I also would like to see, for example, the "Tools" section to be updated and undergo a maintenance "run" from Devil Pig itself, instead of giving the goal of it to volunteers from the community (that don't have done anything yet, or have done very few things in order to keep that "tools" section useful, easy to utilize and up-to-date without errors, misprinted units and with the Stalingrad materials added into it, without HoN tiles being mixed up with HoBR or ShON sets… I mean… Why I am obliged to buy a Core Set of SoN if I do want to collect certain weapons or the UK "Desert Rats" troops?!? And why there is not the chance to buy the Partisans or the Paratroopers that are now labelled as "out of stock" ?!?).

Want to start HoN! what do I buy? Posted on [08/03/2020] à 23:59

Thank you all for the extremely helpful and informative replies. I am SO close to pulling the trigger on Heroes of Stalingrad, but have one more clarification to request if you will indulge me.

Currently if I select the "Heroes of Stalingrad" section of the shop, listed items include:

    1st SS Panzer division

    Civilians under Fire – FR/ENG

    GE 21eme PZ

However, it looks (to a novice like me at any rate) like all 3 of these are expansions/additions for HoN not HoS. "Civilians" in particular has a proviso that "You must have the Heroes of Normandie core box to play with it."

Can anyone clarify if any of these three do, in fact, expand Heroes of Stalingrad (not Normandie), and whether I would need HoN to use the Civilians pack?

TIA
