Scattering and Offset Grid
Scattering and Offset Grid Posted on [28/01/2020] à 03:43

Example of mortar fire. Scattered two interspaces right from the target. Does the attacker decide where it goes? This is how we have been playing it.

To keep the result the spirit of random scatter, I would suggest rolling a die, with 1-3 going to one of the interspaces and 4-6 going to the other.

I sent an email to Clem to ask about an official answer, but that die roll is a good idea.

I agree. The die roll is an excellent idea.

I had a semi-complete answer from Clem.

First, the half-square should be taken into account when measuring distance.

Although it's not specifically included in the part about Indirect Fire, there's an example with grenades, which explains how to measure distance when using interspaces, on page 24 of the rule book.

In case with Indirect Fire of the mortar, the 2-interspace scattering moves the target to the interspace above or below the 'c' of the word scattering in SlyFox's image above. I have no confirmation yet to which interspace the mortar effectively scatters.

I'll report back when I know more.

I should have remembered that part myself! Thanks for working the issue, Bart.

Why Artillery tokens report a "Scatter 3" icon / spaces and, instead, all the explosion templates have the "scatter2"/normal icon onto them?!?

Is it a misprinting; a new ruling for artillery (kinda unrealistic, as regards the german one, at least, since it was very reliable and precise… So the scatter two is correct for german artillery and the three space scatter is for the more unprecise artillery usef by soviets and great britain; if you want to play hon more realistically, and in a historically correct way)… Or what?!?

Dice rolls "1 to 3 equals solution A" and "4 to 6 equals B", is the typical way wargamers and wh 40000 gamers do, in order to solve mechanics and rules / choices from paralysis of analysis issues which can occur during games…

What is important is the "flow of the game"… Fun prevails over the strict rules that cause, sometimes, issues similar to this one; during games!!!
